As tastemakers, trailblazers, and trendsetters in the arts, Leon has enjoyed an impressive amount of success as one of the most celebrated galleries within the contemporary arts scene in Denver. As we move forward, we envision a new model for the art gallery, one that will allow us to continue to benefit the artists we present as well as the community that we serve. As we skyrocket to even greater heights, we wanted to take a moment to look back at some of the artists we have worked with over the years and celebrate their remarkable work. After all, Leon is what it is today because of our artists and because of our community. Join us on Saturday, August 25th from 2pm - 11pm as we celebrate with new work and old favorites, from our family of artists.

Segregated Influences

COMPLEXION, explores the historical concept of colorism in the African-American/Black Diaspora. The definition of COLORISMDiscrimination based on skin color. Colorism is a form of prejudice or discrimination in which people are treated differently based on the social meanings attached to skin color."  Contemporary to the “paper bag test,” COMPLEXION focuses on the intersections of Black culture, systemic racism, and the ideal visual representation of Black Bodies presented by the media.

The first iteration of Colorism recently exhibited at The Dairy Art Center, Boulder CO, derives specifically from the 1950s, a time where it was perceived the American Dream was finally introduced to people of color BUT people of color were absolutely misrepresented by the imagery the magazine produced. Unlike today’s Jet Magazine filled with Celebrities of darker skin tones, fairer skinned women of color infused with European inspired hairstyles were deemed most attractive, desirable and complex socially.
